There is no single holiday that I love more than Halloween! It is, by far, the holiday that gives me the most happy childhood memories and the only holiday I can remember both of my parents participating equally and sharing the work load of keeping the neighborhood kids filled with candy and properly scared.
Once we were old enough to Trick or Treat alone, my Mom stayed home handing out candy and making sure the cassette player (oh YES, I said cassette) was flipped over in time to keep the Halloween theme music running. One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater anyone?
My Dad built us a cemetery out of plywood with infamous tombstones, Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll, and even my shadow as a ghost. The tombstones had a black light on them, and left creepy shadows. He made life sized mummies to hang from the tree in our cemetery and dressed up as this creepy monk guy with the sole intention of making young children scream in the night. It was EPIC.
My brother and I both decorate for Halloween every year, so I think it’s safe to say he also has great memories from childhood. As adults, dressing up for work, when we’re allowed, and decorating our personal homes, maybe with a little competitive edge *cough*, is the way we relive those great memories from childhood. Unfortunately, most outfits for women are a little too provocative to wear to work.
I did some digging for you and found not only work approved (at least for me) costumes, and frugal items! These are ALL on clearance at the time of writing this post. If you see a price increase please let me know!
Pink Ladies Jacket – All you would have to do is curl up some big hair and wear leggings to be your own star of Grease!
Nun – Ok ok, we’ve all seen the nun and the pregnant nun, but hey, this is for work right?
Poodle Skirt – I am pretty sure this is a classic costume and totally adorable and if you’re crafty I am sure you could sew one!
Flo from Progressive Insurance– Yes, I find this particularly funny because I work in insurance, but hey, she’s famous!
Star Trek Tee– This is EASY! A t-shirt paired with black pants and you’re on the crew. Just don’t buy the red one. We know what happens to the red shirts.
Pocahontas – Adorable and could be used for Thanksgiving plays etc. as well as your kids grow!
Referee- Again a pair of black pants finishes this off. It’s football season, so I imagine you could find ways to crack a few jokes while in this uniform!
#costume- No, really, it’s a #. That one made me giggle. I’m sure you could make this at home for a fairly cheap price too.
Sue from Glee– Walk around all night with a bullhorn yelling insults at people?
Southern Belle– Well, I do declare this costume is just delightful!
Jessie from Toy Story– This could be a great companion costume for going out with your kids at night and cute as a bug in a rug during the day!
Elf on a Shelf – With a few tweaks to the costume you could have an excuse to be naughty all day and night! Again, if you can sew, I think this would be a pretty inexpensive costume!
