If you are not a fan of the Fitbit product, then I’ll tell you right now, this post is not for you. I am about to do something you’ll rarely see, and that is to 100% without a doubt endorse a product.
I LOVE MY FITBIT!!! There, I said it.
I am not really a gadget type of person. I don’t fall in love with every new electronic that is supposed to enhance my life. I just don’t. In fact, these are the electronic gizmos I own and use regularly:
iPhone 4- Oh yes, I still have a FOUR. Why? I saved up and paid cash for that sucker. I also put it in an Otterbox the minute they became available, and it’s in pristine condition. It works, why replace it?
Kindle- You have no idea how long it took me to start reading ebooks. I received my first Kindle for Christmas…this last year. I love actual books, with the smell of new paper (move over Hermione Grainger…and if you don’t know why I used these reference, you clearly have not read Harry Potter as many times as I have), and most of all, the sound a brand new spine of a hardback book makes when you crack it open for the first time. It’s heaven to me. OKAY, I’m weird.
Fitbit- I’m not exaggerating when I say I feel like I have a personal trainer on my wrist 24/7.
So, that’s me. 3 gadgets.
I have a Fitbit Charge, and it looks like this:
I suppose I should give some credit for the Fitbit obsession to my friend Amanda. She had one for years, and there were times I honestly thought if I heard her say “My Fitbit” one more time I was going to choke her with it! I guess word of mouth advertising is the best in the end, because I bit the bullet and bought one!
After I deciding this year is going to be the year I handle my weight, and I started the Packed Lunch Challenge I knew I needed some help keeping myself accountable and actually tracking what I do. I knew as much as I LOVE being frugal, that this investment into my health is something that had to happen.
If you want to read about all the cool features, go check out some reviews. I would rather tell you what the Fitbit Charge is doing for me, then to recite features.
1. It’s giving me a goal
The Fitbit comes pre-programmed with a 10k steps per day goal. It’s based on an average of walking 5 miles per day. I have not hit that goal. Yes, you can lower the goal to feel like you accomplish more, but I am leaving mine exactly where it is. That way, when I feel that first vibration, and I get a notification and achievement badge, I’ll know it’s because I REALLY DID IT, and I didn’t cheat myself out of the feeling of a big win!
2. It’s a visual reminder to get up and move
We people who are keyboard warriors, you know, people who work in and office, gamers, bloggers, or anyone else who is pretty sedentary, having a thicker black band around your wrist is a pretty visual reminder to get off your butt and move a little more.
3. The Community is pretty awesome
Fitbit has its own community with weight loss tips, and even better, people who are willing to accept friend invites and join you in daily, weekly, and weekend challenges. I will say they are all dirty liars who act like they don’t EVER walk anywhere, but are really walking 20k steps per day, but they’re all really nice dirty liars. 😉 If you’re looking for a support group, it’s a great place to go to avoid feeling lonely!
4. It tells me how well I sleep
For the longest time, I was so exhausted during the day. I couldn’t figure out why I was exhausted, but I had a suspicion I wasn’t sleeping well at all. Fitbit confirmed I toss and turn a lot, I’m guessing due to back pain because it’s better and better the more weight I lose.
5. It’s a challenge!
I played sports. I’m competitive. Although some of the people in my challenge groups are way ahead of me in steps, I actually like that. It gives me something to aspire to. It gives me a sense of knowing that when the day comes I actually win a challenge, it will be because I EARNED IT, literally every single step of the way and without lower my standards, or thinking I should do less than the best!
I can’t express much more how much this has helped motivate me, and why I only take it off in the shower. I love it, and that’s not something I say lightly. Do you have an activity tracker? Do you love it? Tell me what you’re using and if you have a Fitbit and want to be in challenges with me, here is the link to my profile!
